Cancer – the word itself brings fear to the minds of people. A disease that can ruin lives, shatter dreams and can lead anyone to bankruptcy. It is basically a type of disease in which cells –exhibits abnormal and uncontrolled growth, forms tumors, invades and destroys tissues and organs and sometimes spread to different locations in a body (metastasis). The tumors often secrete hormones that may affect normal body functions. There are over 100 different types of cancer known to man and they are classified by their scope of infection of specific body parts.
Cancer occurs mainly due to pollutions, lifestyle, food habits and sometime due to genetics. It can also be hereditary and can pass down from parents to child. Addictions like smoking and other tobacco usages, alcohol other and other narcotics helps in growth of cancerous cells and must be discontinued. To sum this up, Carcinogens (substances which promote or support cancer cells) like tobacco, asbestos, arsenic, radiation, X-rays, pollution, car exhaust fumes, and ultra violet rays from sun are directly responsible for cancer.
Identifying Cancer mandatorily requires the biopsy of a specimen. Beside biopsy, X-Rays, CT Scans, USG, Bone Marrow Test etc. also helps in determining the extent, stage and damage caused by the cancer cells. But please bear in mind CT Scans and X-Rays themselves are carcinogens, i.e. they promote cancer and hence they are used only when it is absolutely necessary.
Cancer is mainly treated by surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy or hormone therapy and sometimes a combination of these methods are employed along with palliative care. Due to recent advancement and technological breakthroughs, emerging treatments like gene therapy is fast gaining grounds. Gene therapy works by replacing damaged p53 gene with a working copy, which governs the cell division. As it is a new frontier, success is yet to be achieved.
Key to cancer prevention sometimes depends on systematic screening in order to detect small tumors at their early stage in absence of specific symptoms. Common screening methods like breast self-examination, mammograms, Pap smears, and testicular self-examinations are common screening methods for various cancers. Cancer education is absolutely required for self diagnosis and is readily available at hospitals, news papers and on the internet.
